The Homeunbound Journey

Homeunbound is both a book and an ongoing project, an evolving exploration of how people adapt to new environments and how those experiences reshape their sense of identity and belonging.

The seed of Homeunbound was planted in 2000, shortly after I had settled in Australia. Returning from a trip to my native Italy, I was greeted in Sydney with the words, “Welcome home.” The phrase, though kind, unsettled me. Italy, my language, culture, and connections,  had always been home. How could that home simply be replaced by another?

Over time, I came to understand that migration is not a single act of relocation but a continuous process of transformation. It is less a matter of flipping a switch than of rewiring one’s inner circuit. Years of living across countries taught me that “home” is not fixed, it is a sense of belonging beyond boundaries that shifts, multiplies and grows with us.

This realization motivated me to investigate how others have experienced similar changes, deepening my understanding of what it truly means to feel at home. From that curiosity, Homeunbound emerged as a space to magnify stories, memories, and voices that reveal how identity and belonging evolve.

Although it began as a book, this project has continued to grow. Through art, dialogue, and community, Homeunbound invites people to share their experiences, listen to others, and reflect on what connects us.

We invite you to dive into the website: revisit past events, follow new journeys through the blog, and contribute your own voice to the conversation. Each story shared keeps the collective journey of Homeunbound alive.

Bianca Soria

Born and raised in Italy, Bianca has spent most of her adult life abroad, calling Australia, China, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, and Spain home at different moments in her journey. These experiences have deeply shaped her outlook and inspired her to explore what it means to belong, move, and connect across cultures.

Her book, Homeunbound, grew from this life lived in motion and from a desire to share those insights with a wider community. Today Bianca is living between the Netherlands and Spain as she continues to expand the project, letting it evolve naturally and guide her toward new conversations, collaborations, and opportunities.
